Acharya Shri Abhaydeo Suri arrived
at Mandore in V. 1156, when Padihar Nahadrao Inda was the King of Mandore. He
went to the Acharaya and submitted that he had no son. Acharya said, “A Jain
monk cannot do any worldly act, but if it is in the interest of Jainism, then
alone he could do something. If you agree that you will make your first son a
Jion-monk, then I can bless you to be a father of four sons”. He and the queen
both agreed to the proposal, Acharya gave them his blessings them for four
sons, and strictly warned them to keep the promise.
Acharya
expired in V. 1169. he ordered his disciples to give the Acharya’s post to Muni
Vallabh. Acharya Shri Jin Vallbh Suri also expired after only six months, so
Muni Somchand Suri became Acharya and named him Jindutt Suri.
Acharya
Shri Jindutt Suri arrived at Mandore and urged on to the king of Mandore to
give his eldest son in adoption as a Jain monk, but the queen refused and said,
“If he became a Jain monk, then he will wander from door to door and beg alms,
so I won’t allow this.” Acharya proccded further empty handed.
After
a few days unfortunately the eldest son while taling his meals ate a baked
snake. Many vaidhya tried their level best to cure the prince but in vain.
The condition of the princes became
worst. He was on the death bed. All were weaping. At that time, Diwan Gundharji
requsted the King to go at once to the Acharya, so they all went to Sojat,
where Acharya was staying. The king agreed to be his follower, and they all
converted them-selves and became Oswals.
Acharya
ordered Gundharji to bring butter of Kukdi cow or a bitch. Acharya by way of
consecration recited Mantra and ordered Gandharaji for plastering the butter on
the whole the body. Immediately the prince got rid of the poison. All the
family persons, diwans and others converted themselves to the Oswal cult and
adopted Jain religion and took to the cult of Ahinsa.
The
firsy son was named Kukad-Chopra, second son was Chimpaji, so his family named
Chimpa, third son was Sandeji, so his family named Sand, The family of Diwan
Hans was named Hans. Family of Diwan Gandharji was named Gandhar-Chopra. Gndhi,
Hakam, Kothari gotras got the names according to their business or professions.
Kuldevi of these gotras is Shri
Sachyaya Mata.
Jodhpur
Maharaja Ajitsinghji appointed the two Gandhar-Chopra brother for collectiong
revenue from Jalore and for depositing
the same in Jodhpur treasurary, They were named Modi.
Askaran
Chopra was a famous person of Merta. He built a grand Jain temple at Merta.
Chopra Hansrajji built a jain temple of Lord Sambhavnath at Jaisalmer. Fort,
where there are 604 Jain idols and Gyan Bhandar (A grand library of oldest hand
written Books scriptedon Bhojpatra and Tadpatra. They are well preserved in
steel Almirahs. And few in showcases are there for general exhibition Chopra
Panchaji built Asthapadji Jain temple at Jaislmer fort.
The
above story does not seem to be reliable. Because historian say that Padihars
or Pratihars ruled Mandore only upto the 9th century. Again if we go
through the pedigree of Padihar Kings of Mandore, Nahardeo’s name is not there.
There was no existence of Inda Shakha (gotra) amongst Padihars till that time.
History says that in the 5th pedigree of Nahadrao was Aamrao, who
sruled in the 13th century. Aamrao had twelve sons. The eldest son
was Inda. Family of Inda’s is named Inda Shakha, hence Inda Shakha made its
advent in the 12 century. In fact Chopra’s are Upkeshgachhi and not
Kharttargachhi.
